HistoriCorps, Forest Service, Volunteers Saving Brolliar Cabin
Arizona Conservation CorpsAugust 2, 2019 | Volunteer crews led by HistoriCorps, a nationally recognized non-profit organization, have been working to preserve the Brolliar Park Cabin this summer. The historic cabin, built by one of Arizona’s last homesteaders, is located in the Coconino National Forest south of Mormon Lake.
The award-winning group, which works to save historical structures on public lands around the nation, collaborated with the Coconino National Forest on the four-week project.

Generating STEAM in Arizona: Cultivating a New Generation of Forest Champions
Arizona Conservation CorpsAugust 2, 2019 | In Tucson, the National Forest Foundation, Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, and Arizona Conservation Corps is piloting a novel approach to traditional outdoor education curricula called the Earth Conservation Experience (ECE). The program connects high school students to their backyard forest by blending their individual interests in science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) with their digital and online worlds.

Kaibab National Forest employee recognized for unifying partners in technology development and data sharing
Arizona Conservation CorpsAugust 1, 2019 | A Kaibab National Forest employee was recently recognized for his efforts to bring together diverse stakeholders from across the state to support cooperative investments in technology and to promote data-sharing partnerships.
Mark Christiano, who serves as the forest's geographic information systems coordinator, was the recipient of the Regional Forester's Innovation in Technology Award for the Southwestern Region of the Forest Service.

'This is what we do': Flagstaff residents help one another prepare for disaster
Arizona Conservation CorpsJuly 26, 2019 | FLAGSTAFF — At night, when winds are calm, the smoke subsides, revealing a mosaic of orange flames that glows like stars — a galaxy of destruction cradled by the dark mountains sitting below the twinkling night sky.
Mayor Coral Evans saw a similar sight when she was a child... She knows what kind of devastation these fires can cause, long after the flames are out.
Thanks to the quick response from firefighters and some rain, the Museum Fire is nowhere near as intense as the Radio Fire, the 2010 Schultz Fire and some others in recent memory, and the community is grateful for their work.

Around the Town: Celebrate Earth Day at Bushmaster Park

Alta Vista., including workshops, lectures and giveaways along with live music. Performances will begin at 11 a.m. and include Sambatuque, F-Town Sound, and FoxyKoshka. Kids can explore the PALS Mobile, Learn how to ride a Mountain Line and find Climate Solutions with a scavenger hunt.

Flagstaff Trailheads: Wildlife joys, and celebrating Earth Day in Flag

I've been surprised by elk sightings there, but the time I witnessed a herd of 10 - six of which being fawns - moving quietly through the woods was a truly marvelous moment."

Stewards of the Trails Keeping Grand Canyon Accessible
Arizona Conservation CorpsJanuary 4, 2019 | On the “bucket list” for people all over the world is to hike the Grand Canyon, most notably, the Bright Angel and Kaibab Trails. Of the six million-plus annual Grand Canyon visitors, it is estimated less than 7 percent actually hike down into the canyon (only 1 percent to the bottom). Even so, that adds up to 434,000 hikers a year on the corridor trails.
Maintaining these popular trails for safe passage are many people who work at times in high heat and low temperatures to ensure hikers and mule riders a safe journey.

Kartchner Caverns State Park Celebrates a New Trail
Arizona Conservation CorpsApril 10, 2018 | Kartchner Caverns State Park is inviting the public to come celebrate its newest hiking trail and renovation of the existing Foothills Loop Trail at an Earth Day event on April 22. Built in response to visitor requests for additional and more challenging trails at Kartchner Caverns State Park, the new trail is 1.75 miles through the foothills of the Whetstone Mountains. All trail work was completed with hand tools by the Arizona Conservation Corps (AZCC) trail crew and park staff.

Black-tailed Prairie Dogs released near Sonoita
Arizona Conservation CorpsOctober 13th 2017 | There are some new residents living near Sonoita, thanks to the Arizona Game and Fish Department. Crews released 94 black-tailed prairie dogs at Pima County's Sands Ranch on Friday, Oct. 13.
