Conservation Legacy Welcomes Two New Members To Board of Directors

DURANGO, CO September 5th, 2025— Conservation Legacy is proud to announce the appointment of two federal agency leaders, Susan Johnson and Peggy O’Dell, to its Board of Directors. Both bring decades of experience in public service, land management, and youth engagement that will further strengthen Conservation Legacy’s mission to cultivate a legacy of service and stewardship across the nation.

Susan Johnson recently retired after 35 years of federal service, including more than three decades with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Park Service. An enrolled member of the Three Affiliated Tribes of North Dakota, Johnson’s work consistently focused on integrating Indigenous knowledge and perspectives into land management strategies and advancing collaborative approaches to stewardship. Johnson has a long-standing relationship with Conservation Legacy, including her early support of the Veterans Fire Corps established in 2009.

Peggy O’Dell served for 37 years with the National Park Service, holding leadership positions ranging from Interpretive Park Ranger to Deputy Director of Operations. Her career included work at the Gateway Arch National Park, Olympic National Park, the National Mall and Memorial Parks, and the NPS Washington Headquarters. O’Dell was instrumental in shaping interpretive programs, visitor engagement strategies, and policies leading up to the NPS Centennial in 2016. Since retiring, she has continued to support conservation and public service as a consultant for NEW Solutions, while also enjoying time with her family and grandchildren.

“Conservation Legacy is honored to welcome Susan Johnson and Peggy O’Dell to our Board of Directors,” said Amy Sovocool, President of Conservation Legacy. “Their expertise and perspectives will support our strategic efforts across the nation and their ongoing commitment to service to public lands will bring great value to the organization.”

Johnson and O’Dell join a dedicated board helping guide Conservation Legacy in its mission to engage future leaders who protect, restore, and enhance our nation’s lands through community-based service.
