A Home Heating Crisis. A Devastating Forest Fire Waiting to Happen. One Innovative Solution
Ancestral LandsJanuary 29th, 2021 | It’s been a fragmented and fluid emergency effort to save lives that’s difficult to measure. Some, like Anthony, harvest and cut firewood to give away. Others, like professional woodcutter Neil Damon, sell it for a razor-thin profit, with prices scaled to meet the financial needs of consumers. And lately, professional woodcutters, Indigenous community activists, and tribal officials have collaborated with the U.S. Forest Service and nonprofits to deliver firewood made from logs that have been mechanically thinned from Arizona’s tinder-dry national forests in an effort to avert deadly wildfires that are only getting worse. This fledgling program is aptly called “Wood for Life.”
